Wooden Bowl

Description

Fragments of two bowls with shallow footrings and rim diameter of 115 mm were recovered from the Swash Channel wreck, SCW619 & 627. The narrow diameter of these bowls indicates that they were intended more for drinking rather than for the consumption of food. The light bodies, fine turning and narrow lip of these vessels are more consistent with the consumption of wine or spirits, probably by officers. As in the case of the Mary Rose (1545), larger bowls would have been better for consuming wet foods. Such fine ‘treen’ drinking bowls are extremely rare survivals for the period, on either terrestrial or maritime contexts.
