Description

SCW861 consist of a damaged cask truncated to approximately half size although one stave is almost complete. It consists of 10 staves, a head consisting of three head staves and two fragments of hooping . One of the staves has been identified as the bung stave with two small bungholes.

The head of 861 measures 468mm diameter with the largest stave surviving to c.500mm giving a surviving volume of c.66 litres.

SCW861 contained 33 butchered animal bones all of these were of a uniform size of approximately 15cm in length. It is thought that these represent the remains of a cask of preserved beef.
