Gunport Lid

Description

The lid measures c.930mm in height by 970mm in width and is composed of two layers of timber at right angles to each other.

The inboard face consists of 4 pieces of timber laying horizontally place together create a flat layer approximately 880mm2 and 50mm thick. This layer is fastened to the outer layer with closely spaced nails in a diamond pattern.  The nail holes for the inner staple are also present suggesting a similar arrangement to the Vasa gunport lids.

The outer layer consists of three 50 to 70mm thick pieces of horizontally laid timber placed in such a way to create a segment of circle, providing strength and mimicking the curve of the ship. The impressions of two hinges c.50mm wide either side of the lid are visible, the left hinge appears to terminate with a decorative bone style end connected by two square nails, however this is not reflected on the right hinge where the last nail terminates in line with the penultimate nail of the left hinge. The nail holes for an outer staple in the lower centre of the lid are also present.
