Description

SCW50 is a large oval shaped single sheaved block measuring approx. 470 x 315mm but is only 145mm thick. Similar blocks were found on the Vasa and described as “[single sheaved] Sub-type 4. Broad, Flat, Lenticular Blocks… a specialized and somewhat delicate sub-type” (Howe, 2011, p. 115) these were thought to be part of Vasa’s mast tackles (Stolt & Hocker, 1981), with a swallow of c.50mm. Howe (2011, p. 234) points out “there are far fewer of these blocks than would be expected if they were from the mast tackles. Yet, no other clear use for such specialized blocks can be determined.”
